“Now we can focus on long-term issues”, coalition says.
The government’s announcement this morning that work has stopped on the Sherway-area Greenfield South power plant “is a key milestone on the road to better decisions in future”, says Greg Rohn, co-chair of the Coalition of Homeowners for Intelligent Power (CHIP).
“We’re very pleased. We’ve known since the election that intense work was going on in the background to resolve the construction issue,” he said. “We wanted to give all the parties some breathing room to allow that to happen.”
Charles was receptive and understands our concerns. He has been out of the country (Pan Am Games as Provincial representative). He’s now back in action and there is a cabinet meeting coming up.
Steve Thompson and Tony Jones, along with Dr. Boyd Upper, are meeting with Charles Sousa tonight. The purposes of the meeting are to let Mr. Sousa know that we can no longer stand by and watch this one-sided charade, in which OPA supposedly negotiates with EPL, while EPL continues to build at full speed. We will be asking for specific actions from Charles and the government on this issue.
You have been sworn in. It is now time to keep the promises that were made before the election, beginning with the immediate stoppage of work at the Greenfield South site.
The above was a the wording of a poster issued by the British Government at the beginning of WWII. We use it now because it’s easy for people to get concerned at the continuing construction at the site.
A belated Happy Thanksgiving to all. One thing that we at CHIP were very thankful for was the recent commitment by the Liberal party (and subsequently the PC party) to the cancellation of the Greenfield South (Sherway) power plant. As previously stated, this was an election promise. Well the election is over and now is the time for the new government to follow through on this promise. With the minority government in place, it is more important than ever to keep the public pressure on our newly elected MPP’s.
Scores, out of 10, based on likelihood of cancelling:
LIB: 9 (they have agreed after a long fight, but there’s always the unexpected)
Green: 1 (committed, but they won’t have the power)
PC: 5 (promised late, high deception factor; expect backtracking, esp. if minority)
NDP: 2 (very focused on cost to cancel, no commitment offered, new fight needed)
Both the Liberals, the Progressive Conservatives and the Green party have made "pledges" to kill the Greenfield South (Sherway) Power Plant if elected.
We could not get a commitment from the NDP.
Over the past few years, some politicians like Charles Sousa have been more supportive to CHIP's cause than others. Review the videos below for a final time, and make a decision by voting today!
September 24: Charles Sousa announcing that the Liberal Government, if elected, will cancel the Greenfield South (Sherway) Power Plant:
Today, October 4, we did a voice mail message to affected communities, to correct some misinformation about the power plant and to update people on the responses of the various political parties so far. Unfortunately, we overlooked the issue of “Do Not Call” (we have never done this before) and failed to ensure that the DNC was activated.
As a result, some of you may have received our message in error.
We are very sorry! Please accept our apologies, and our promise that this will never happen again. We don’t like getting unwelcome calls either.
